Hi, I'm a Children's Bookseller

Hello, lovely bookish friends!

There's something I haven't talked much about on my blog, but it's a big part of my bookish life: I am a Children's Bookseller.

I mean, I'm a "regular" bookseller, too. Which I have definitely mentioned about 200 times. But specifically, I am in charge of my store's entire kid's section, ranging from picture books to early chapter books to middle grade and young adult.

I have always loved reading YA, but before the Children's Section became my responsibility, it had been a MINUTE since I read a picture book (understandably). But actually, this job has really made me remember all the things that inspired me to love reading as a kid, and it's sparked a deeper passion and appreciation for children's literature and its importance in raising readers!


So what I'm trying to say is... I love to read kids books! I've been reading a lot of picture books lately, as well as early chapter books. I try to pepper them between my other reading, but sometimes I feel like it's most of what I read so it's weird to not share it here.

I'm sure that most people reading my blog don't care that much about picture books, but I've got to stay true to me, and that means sometimes I'm going to talk about picture books! (Although, I definitely plan on keeping my blog YA-centric)

So with all that said, I thought it would be fun to share:

Surprise! by Caroline Hadilaksono

I totally love this! The illustrations are vibrant and inviting, and the story is really funny! A group of forest friends collect some campers' grub for a surprise party feast, but when the campers return they misinterpret the situation. Also: great for the fall vibes!

Desmond Cole Ghost Patrol by Andres Miedoso

So I actually read a random book in this series instead of starting at number one, because I figured it didn't matter (wrong) and the main thing to note is that Desmond is NOT the narrator (Andres, to the right, is). But the story is cute, a little spooky, with lots of illustrations and adventure. I think it would be great for 6 or 7 year olds!





Ghoulia by Barbara Cantini

This might be my favorite of them all. This friendly-spooky book is the perfect step between a picture book and a chapter book, as it has larger, developed paragraphs but also lots and lots of full color illustrations. I particularly love the character sketches of Tragedy the dog, Shadow the cat, Auntie Departed, etc., although they are a bit extraneous to the story in this first installment.

Ghoulia is about a little zombie girl who seizes Halloween as an opportunity to meet the neighborhood children without giving away her undead secret! It's a little simplistic, but a good message. And there are fun activities in the back!
