I like to annotate books as a way of helping me engage with a text while I'm reading it, but I do not mark things just because they sound nice, and I rarely find things that truly speak to me. That said, I was surprised that it wasn't that difficult to come of with a list (of only five) quotes that have stuck with me for one reason or another.
Mr. and Mrs. Dursley, of number four Privet Drive, were proud to say that they were perfectly normal, thank you very much.J. K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerers Stone
The sky had never seemed so sky; the world had never seemed so world.
Neil Gaiman, Coraline
This is a quote that makes me think about living life with open eyes and an open heart. It was also the quote I used on my graduation invitations!
In the depths of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer
Albert Camus, L'été
Speaking of graduation, this was my senior quote. Except it was in French because apparently I was pretentious as fuck (but I am about to finish my BA in French so it's not entirely inappropriate).
I had diverged, digressed, wandered, and become wild.
Cheryl Strayed, Wild
I said that not a lot of quotes truly speak to me, but this one did. This whole book did. Maybe it's cliché, but this was one of the most true books I've read. I like the idea of wild being an empowering word related to self-discovery.
Go and make interesting mistakes, make amazing mistakes, make glorious and fantastic mistakes. Break rules. Leave the world more interesting for you being here.
Neil Gaiman, Make Good Art
Real talk: this is a quote I could do to remember more often. I can spend a lot of time in my head instead of taking action, and a lot of time worrying about being perfect instead of exploring me.
What about you? Are you a quotes person? Do you take a lot of notes when your reading? I'd love to hear from you.
