I don’t normally make TBRs, let alone stick to them. But
this month I’m inspired to actually try to finish the books I chose for myself.
I’m sure there will be a little variation, but the main things I want to focus
on are:
- Reading books on paper with my eyeballs (instead of audio-ing the day away)
- Tackling as many ARCs as I can before they release
- Dedicating a little time to backlist titles I’ve been itching to read, inspired by the #unreadshelfproject2018
Here’s what I’m aiming for!
A Very Large Expanse of Sea by Tahereh Mafi

This is my current read and I’m absolutely eating it up. And
now it has a beautiful new cover! It follows Shirin, and Iranian American going
to high school in the post-9/11 era. So far, it’s an eye opening read and also
I loooove Shirin and how she doesn’t take anyone’s bullshit. Now I’m just
hoping it doesn’t break my heart.
What If It’s Us by Becky Albertalli and Adam Silvera
YA Contemporary, 448 pages

To be honest, I couldn’t really tell you what this book is
about, but I know it’s a gay love story with Broadway theatre and it’s written
by the ultimate gay contemporary author dream team. And that’s all I need to
know. It’s a chunky book for a contemporary at almost 450 pages, and I know I’m
going to devour every last word.
Lady Midnight by Cassandra Clare
YA Fantasy, 698 pages

This is one of the most shameful books on my TBR. I read
every single one of the Mortal Instrument books on their release dates for a
long time, but I’ve fallen off of the Cassie Clare wagon as of late. Which is a
total bummer since I hear they are only getting better. Lady Midnight finally
needs to happen for me!
The Wicked King by Holly Black
YA Fantasy, 336 pages

I just finished The Cruel Prince and it’s probably my
favorite read of the year so far, and it’s definitely the best YA fantasy I’ve
read in a while. So needless to say, I am d y I n g to read this sequel, so I
think I’m just going to lean into it (and not think about the year and a half
wait for book three).
In the Distance by Hernan Diaz
Literary Fiction, 272 pages
Published October 10, 2017 by Coffee House Press
I’ve mentioned this one on the blog before. Basically it’s a
kind of reverse-western fantasy book – literary fiction – and was recently
nominated for the Pulitzer. But the main reason I want to read it is because
everyone at my store is in love with it and I feel left out. Plus, it’s good to
read something a little different every once in a while!
Rabbit & Robot by Andrew Smith
YA Contemporary/Sci-Fi, 448 pages
September 25, 2018 from Simon & Schuster
If I had to choose one 2018 release I’m most excited for,
this might be it (The Lady’s Guide to Petticoats and Piracy is a close
contender). Andrew Smith’s Winger is one of my favorite books of all times and
this one sounds as weird and experimental and amazing as ever. I can’t wait!
